Struck in 1797, the British Cartwheel Two Pence is a true heavyweight of history—literally and figuratively. Weighing a solid two ounces of copper, it was the largest circulating coin in British history and found its way to the shores of New South Wales during the early 1800s. As part of Governor King's 1800 Proclamation, this imposing coin gained official status in the struggling colony, where coinage was scarce and barter was still common.
